Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) occurs when the nerves and/or blood vessels that travel to your arm are blocked or pinched between your collarbone and first rib. There are many causes of TOS including but not limited to: sports, car accident, pregnancy, or having an extra rib. Symptoms may include:
- Numbness and tingling in fingers
- Shoulder and neck pain
- Weak grip
- Bluish color of your hand
- Throbbing pain near collarbone
- Weak or absent pulse at the wrist
Physical therapy is often prescribed by your physician to help improve posture, strengthen the muscles around the thoracic outlet to prevent further impingement, proper sleeping habits, and stretching the muscles surrounding the outlet to decrease tension. Talk to your doctor or other health care provider if you think you may have some of these symptoms.
